GSM — What Does It Mean & Which Is Right for Me?
What is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square metre — it measures how much fabric is packed into the weave. A higher GSM means a thicker, denser towel. A lower GSM means lighter and faster-drying.
What GSM are Rave Rags?
- 200 GSM — used across the Pocket Rocket, all Original / Standard Rave Rags, and the LOCA collab. Lightweight, quick-drying, and packable. The right choice for festivals, raves, and travel where you need something that packs down small and dries fast.
- ~400 GSM — used in the Gym Buddy only. Thicker and more absorbent, better suited to gym sessions and heavier-duty use. It takes longer to dry than the 200 GSM versions.
200 GSM vs 400 GSM — which should I choose?
| 200 GSM (Original / Pocket Rocket) | ~400 GSM (Gym Buddy) | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 35–90 g | ~200 g |
| Packability | Excellent — rolls or folds very small | Good — bulkier than 200 GSM |
| Drying speed | Fast | Slower |
| Absorbency | High for the weight | Higher overall |
| Best for | Festivals, raves, travel, beach | Gym bench, beach, festival showers |
Packability
How small does a Rave Rag pack down?
The 200 GSM originals and Pocket Rocket roll up small enough to slip into a side pocket or a small festival bag. At 35–90 g, they're light enough that you won't notice them until you need them. The Gym Buddy is larger and heavier and will need a bit more bag space.
Absorbency & Skin Feel
Are microfibre towels actually absorbent?
Yes — microfibre fabric absorbs moisture quickly due to the fine split fibres that create a large surface area. Our 200 GSM towels are described as highly absorbent in the product listings, and the ~400 GSM Gym Buddy is thicker with greater overall moisture capacity. That said, microfibre absorbs differently to a thick cotton towel — it wicks and spreads moisture quickly rather than simply soaking it up in bulk.
What does microfibre feel like on skin?
All Rave Rags are made from soft microfibre and are described as super soft on the skin. Microfibre is generally gentler than cotton as it doesn't drag or scratch. Some people find very lightweight microfibre (like 200 GSM) feels different to what they're used to — it's thinner and smoother rather than fluffy. If you've not used microfibre before, it may take one wash to fully soften.
Washing & Care
What temperature should I wash my Rave Rag at?
Wash at 30°C or 40°C maximum. Hot washes can damage the microfibre split structure and reduce absorbency over time. A cool or warm wash is sufficient to clean microfibre thoroughly.
Caveat: Our product listings don't currently include a printed care label temperature — the above is standard manufacturer guidance for microfibre fabric. Always check the care label on your specific towel if one is present.
Can I use fabric softener?
No — avoid fabric softener. This is the single most important care rule for microfibre. Fabric softener coats the fibres and clogs the tiny gaps that make microfibre absorbent. Even one wash with softener can significantly reduce performance. Use a plain detergent only.
Can I tumble dry my Rave Rag?
Microfibre dries quickly on its own, so tumble drying is rarely necessary. If you do use a dryer, use a low heat setting only — high heat can melt or damage the fibres. Air drying is always the safest option.
Can I wash it with other laundry?
Yeah, don't worry too much! But other synthetics best if your'e a fussy washer!
Odour Care
My towel smells a bit after use — is that normal?
Yes, this is common with microfibre. The same fine fibres that make microfibre absorbent can trap bacteria and oils from sweat, which cause odour if the towel isn't washed promptly or dried fully. This is especially common after festival use where the towel may have been damp for a while.
How do I get rid of odours from a microfibre towel?
A few approaches that work well with microfibre:
- Wash promptly after use — don't leave a damp towel in your bag for days. The sooner you wash it, the less chance bacteria have to set in.
- Add a small amount of white wine vinegar to the wash (in place of fabric softener, not with it) — a well-known deodorising method for microfibre. Use around 60–120 ml in the softener drawer or drum. Run a normal cool wash cycle.
- Baking soda in the wash — add a tablespoon alongside your detergent to help neutralise odours.
- Avoid drying indoors without airflow — a damp towel dried slowly in a closed room will develop mildew smell. Hang in a well-ventilated spot or outside if possible.
- Check your detergent — some detergents leave residue in microfibre at low temperatures. If odours persist, try a specialist microfibre wash or run an extra rinse cycle.
Note: the above is general microfibre care guidance. We recommend testing any new method on a small area or doing a test wash before relying on it for all your Rave Rags.
How should I store my towel between uses?
Make sure the towel is completely dry before storing. Rolling or folding a damp microfibre towel and leaving it in a bag is the main cause of persistent odour.- In any material! Once dry, it can be rolled small and stored in a breathable pouch or pocket.
Can I hang my towel to dry at a festival?
Yes — all Rave Rags (except the Gym Buddy) include a reinforced hanging eyelet or loop, making it easy to hang from a tent guy rope, backpack clip, or festival fence. This is the best way to dry your towel between uses.
